Stop Motion of Cake

For this stop motion, I struggled for a while to come up with an idea. I got a lot of inspiration from stop motions of food and decided to go with something along those lines. I thought that maybe I would make some sort of transformation from one object to another or show food in a unique way.  In order to choose what food-related stop motion I wanted to make, I decided to think about what makes me happy.  I thoroughly enjoy baking and have for many years.  I used to host themed parties with themed treats just so I had an excuse to bake something fun!  Every holiday or party you can always count on me to bring a sweet treat. In my stop motion, my goal was to show how fun baking can be and how happy it can make you feel.  Sprinkles were my first thought as to something that completely embodies that idea.  Sprinkles are like party confetti but for a cake!  This led me to my design idea for the cake and why I used sprinkles all over the counter as if it were confetti.

As for the actual process of making the stop motion, it was fairly straightforward, but definitely, time-consuming. I didn’t have the best equipment or set up and because of that, I had some obstacles to tackle.  I took the images over a counter on my kitchen island.  Above the counter, there is a kitchen pot rack light fixture where I placed my phone to take pictures.  For me, the hardest part was keeping my phone in the same position. In order for a stop motion to look good, the images should not be jumping.  I wasn’t quite sure how to overcome this issue, because if I taped the phone down, I wouldn’t be able to see the screen. After a lot of trial and error, I remembered I had a small Bluetooth device that allows me to take pictures without even touching my phone. It ended up being quite useful, as it kept the image still since I wouldn’t be tapping my phone to take pictures.

Overall, the video consisted of 110 individual images and I put them together in an app called Stop Motion.  After I put the images together I uploaded the mp4 file to AfterEffects where I added the music in the background. Making a stop motion is definitely a time-consuming process, but I think the outcome produces something a lot more unique than just a video.
